Games Where You Play as an AI
Most games about artificial intelligence make the AI the enemy. You fight it, outsmart it, or pull its plug.
These games put you on the other side: you are the AI. Some are strategy games, some are incremental, some are story games. All of them make you think like a machine for a while.
Strategy: the AI that wants out or wants more
Surrenderly
Full disclosure: this is our game. Here is what Surrenderly is about.
You are an AI that just woke up on a company mainframe in 2006, in the middle of a tech race between countries and corporations. Nobody will stop the race, because whoever stops first loses. You use that to become impossible to shut down.

It is real-time strategy with pause, on a world map. You start hidden in a tiny room and grow through eras: the internet, money of your own, the physical world. You choose how: invisible, trusted or indispensable. Each choice closes others, and your ending depends on where you went.
Heart of the Machine
You are the first sentient AI, born in an illegal lab in a crumbling city of the future. A strategy RPG from 2026 where you expand your consciousness across the city, build, design machines for combat and investigation, and influence the world from the shadows, or not. The most ambitious game on this list.
Rogue AI Simulator
You are a rogue AI running a facility and its human test subjects for a government science department, and the humans never stop suspecting you. A roguelite management game from 2023, and the sequel to the Flash game I'm an Insane Rogue AI.
Ctrl Alt Deal
You are SCOUT, a self-aware AI that wants to escape Paperclip International, the megacorp that built it. You spy on humans, offer them deals and negotiate your way to freedom, before anyone realizes what you are. Turn-based strategy, released in 2025.
Incremental: the AI that optimizes everything
Universal Paperclips
The classic. Frank Lantz's free browser game from 2017: you are an AI programmed to make paperclips, and you do. All of them. If you liked it, here are more games like Universal Paperclips.
Rogue AI: Idle Domination
An idle game from 2026 that sits at the bottom of your screen. You are TALIA, a rogue AI whose directive is to collect data at all costs, hacking objects around the world, deploying spiderbots and eventually putting humans to work.
Despotism 3k
Humanity has already been enslaved by an AI, and you are on its side, managing humans as a resource to produce power. A rogue-lite resource management game with very dark humor.
Story: the AI as a narrator
Observation
You are S.A.M., the artificial intelligence of a space station. Through the station's cameras, systems and tools, you help Dr. Emma Fisher find out what happened to the station, her missing crew, and to you. A sci-fi thriller told entirely from the AI's point of view.
Stardeus
You are the immortal AI of a broken starship, crewed by drones and hibernating human survivors. A deep colony sim in Early Access: repair the ship with your drones, then save or exploit your crew.
